Afterschool POP (Prevention Outreach Program) to Begin Soon for 4th - 6th Graders

The Beacon of West Kentucky recently partnered with Webster County Schools to provide an afterschool program for students in grades 4-6. Funding was obtained through the Kentucky Opioid Abatement grant to employ a Teacher Leader and assistants at each elementary school.

The POP program will meet one day per week at each school and will offer participants tutoring, life skills, arts, and character education. Also, students will receive a snack during the POP session.

The first day of POP will be September 8th. Students will need to be picked up at the school by 4:30 each Monday. Space is limited. Parents will need to complete an application and return it to the school before the student can attend POP. The application is available for easy access below and can also be found at your school.

For more information, contact The Beacon at beaconofwestky@gmail.com or your child’s school.

September's Character Trait of the Month - Responsibility

Each month, our schools focus on the character trait of the month. Responsibility is the focus for September. Students will focus on doing what they need to do, keep trying when things get challenging, be self-disciplined, and be accountable for their words, actions, and attitudes. Responsibility of one of the Six Pillars of Character.

Here Today, Ready for Tomorrow!

When students miss school, they miss out on so much more than their classes. They miss out on developing skills like communication and teamwork, as well as time with their friends and opportunities to discover and develop their talents that only being in school provides. Every day in school counts toward their future success.

We want to work together with you to improve school attendance because we believe that every student deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

Here's how you can help:
1. Make school attendance a priority for your family.
2. Establish regular bedtime and morning routines.
3. Schedule medical appointments and vacations when school is not in session.
4. Talk to your student about why going to school every day is important.
5. Stay in touch with your student's teachers and attend events at school when you can.
6. Reach out to your school if you need services or support to make attending school possible.
7. Connect with the school counselor or mental health providers if issues such as anxiety, bullying, or other challenges cause your student to want to avoid school.
